GROWING DEER RESISTANT PLANTS
SAY BYE-BYE TO BAMBIE…
Each year it seems that deer are becoming more of a problem to homeowners; their habitat and natural food sources are declining, but their numbers are increasing.
Fences are practical solutions for vegetable gardens, but must be 7’ tall to be effective. Otherwise, deer will gracefully leap over them like they were hurdles at a track meet. Animal repellents are numerous and variable in their effectiveness. One may work for your neighbor, but not for you…keep trying until you find one you like. We have had good results with Plant Skydd, which is safe for plants and people alike. We also have Shake Away granules, which are made of coyote urine and represent the threat of a predator to deer. There are many home remedies as well: some of the most popular include the use of human hair, hot pepper sauce, and highly scented bar soaps (such as Irish Spring). Again – they may work for you and they may not, but are worth trying!
Some plants are more attractive to deer than others; if you concentrate on growing the less favored ones, you will have less damage! As a general rule, deer prefer plants that are not heavily scented or rough-textured. Some plants are toxic; deer will eat them only as a last resort.
